1908-2008: 100 years of baby food

There are no translations available.

Head-quarted in Sierre, Switzerland, in the heart of Valais region, Pharmalys combined the culture of the Swiss pharma industry to the well known agriculture tradition of the region. We believe that we offer a high quality Swiss made products.
All Pharmalys formulas are based on the latest researches and are produced under strict GMP regulations.

Pharmalys started its business in baby formula in 1908. Today it’s hard to imagine the problems women encountered when they were unable to breast feed their babies – we just go to the chemist or the supermarket to get the baby food we need.

With a limitless choice at the supermarket, chemist or drugstore today, we take the availability of baby formula for granted. Just 100 years ago, however, it wasn’t so easy for babies and small children who couldn't be breast fed. It was a huge challenge to nourish newborn babies who couldn't get sufficient breast milk right up to the middle of the 20th century.

Things haven't all changed today
Of course nowadays many things in the production of baby food are very different than they were in the early years. But not everything has changed. To introduce innovative products – baby food products included – you need a lot of patience. It has taken time to make information available to doctors, midwives and the general public, but the facts have slowly and surely been established and proven successful. Sales success was bolstered by the collaboration with reputable paediatricians whose research resulted in new formulations and new, improved products. This is still the case today. Good cooperation with leading paediatricians and research institutes results in better foodstuffs – foodstuffs adapted to the needs of babies and small children.

Hygiene and quality
One great difference between the past and present is in the expectations regarding product quality and hygiene regulations. But it is not possible to make any direct comparison due to the lack of information from the early years.

Differing needs
Not all babies are the same. Pharmalys has a wide range of food products for babies, small children and older children. Premature babies have different nutritional requirements to small children. Equally, small children have different food requirements from pre-school children or children already at school. In some cultures it is quite normal for schoolchildren even up to the age of 12 to be given special milk products. Pharmalys also provides products that are geared towards improving the health and resistance of babies or small children.

The story continues
Today Pharmalys offer a complete selection of baby foods. There are products for premature babies and products for pre-school children and older children. The range covers baby milks, cereals and products in jars. The Pharmalys baby foods story continues apace. In recent years, Pharmalys has invested in expanding its production facilities. This includes investing in additional drying capacities and new packaging lines. Pharmalys has even dedicated a 10 million Euros investment in a new state of the art production facility in North Africa region “Tunisia”.So we can look forward optimistically to the second century of Pharmalys baby foods.
